Roll out of the new technology Herschel Science Archive
===================================================
We are pleased to announce the roll out of a new version (v4.0.1) of the Herschel Science Archive (HSA) on 16 May 2012.
The Herschel Science Archive, containing as of today more than 20,000 public observations, has been completely re-engineered to offer improved performance and better user experience.
The new User Interface offers a more modern look and feel. It includes all the functionalities previously provided, plus many new ones,
described at:
http://herschel.esac.esa.int/HSA_News.shtml
The new HSA represents a full migration towards state of the art technology, including re-use of existing open source software libraries and databases, a better client - server transport protocol to overcome firewall issues, and higher code re-usability with other Science Archive projects at ESAC.
You can access the new HSA User Interface at:
http://herschel.esac.esa.int/Science_Archive.shtml
Note that HSA v4.0.1 uses Java Web Start technology. In case you have problems launching the new HSA as a Java Web Start application please read the instructions provided at the above link and the 'HSA Troubleshooting FAQ', or contact the HSC Helpdesk if this does not help and you need further assistance.
Herschel Data Processing Workshop 2012: Presentations On-Line
==============================================================
The presentations made at the "Herschel Data Processing Workshop 2012" that took place at ESAC on 20-24 February 2012, are available on-line at:
http://herschel.esac.esa.int/twiki/bin/view/Public/DataProcessingWorkshop2012
This web site contains not only the PDF files with the presentations but also additional workshop material provided to the participants like the scripts used in the demonstrations and (in some cases) the video recorded sessions addressing various aspects of the Herschel Interactive Processing Environment (HIPE) software, the status of the instrument pipelines, and various data reduction issues which can be of interest to you.
SPIRE PACS Parallel Mode: new PACS observing strategy
======================================================
From OD#1005 onwards the PACS part of Parallel Mode data is taken in a slightly different way. In the on-board SPU software a change from 2 bit to 1 bit rounding has been implemented in order to improve data quality. Previously the PACS data of the PACS/SPIRE parallel mode were taken with 2-bit rounding. The main reason for this degradation of PACS data before downlink was related to a very conservative data rate limit at that time.
The 1 bit-rounding update reduces the quantization noise by ~7% on the detector timeline; a further change to eliminate bit rounding would not achieve any further significant improvement and would lead to data rates considerably exceeding the allowed limits.
