The software package for Herschel Interactive Processing Environment (HIPE)
is the application that allows users to work with the Herschel data, including
finding the data products, interactive analysis, plotting of data and data
manipulation.
Download and Installation Instructions for HIPE 2.0.0 Release Candidate 3 (RC3)
Important note: HIPE 2.0.0 Release Candidate 3 has been released to support the Science Demonstration Phase Data Processing Workshop held in December 2009 and provided to the workshop participants in advance to the formal release of HIPE 2.0.0, planned for early 2010. As a release candidate, this version cannot be considered an official user release of HIPE, as it has not been fully acceptance tested, and may still contain bugs which are yet to be fixed. However, it seems to work well for the processing of Science Demonstration Phase data, so you can use it for this purpose at your own risk. HIPE 1.2.6 is the official user release version of HIPE, and it can be accessed from here.
Operating Systems Supported
- Windows XP and Windows Vista
- MacOS X 10.5 ("Leopard")

- SeaMonkey
Minimum Hardware Requirements
- Windows/Linux 32-bit w/2 GB RAM
- Windows/Linux/Mac 64-bit w/2 GB RAM
Note: This is just to install the SW, but for data processing 4GB RAM is highly recommended. In some particular cases, up to 16GB RAM (or more) may be needed e.g. to process big maps made with PACS.
Information on the JRE (Java Runtime Environment)
Since version 2.0, the HIPE installers for Windows and Linux always come with JRE (Java Runtime Environment) bundled to the installer. The JRE come in two flavors (32 bit and 64 bit). The second one allows to allocate more than 2.5 GB of memory to the installed software. Both flavors include the official java version (Sun Java 6, update 13) compatible with the Herschel software. In the case of MacOS X, the installer instruction page contains a link to the Apple site to download the appropriate JRE.
Download the installer for HIPE
See the instructions below for installing on the different operating systems.
Important note: You have to keep your internet connection on during installation as you download all the necessary components.
Installation Instructions
Windows Instructions:
Instructions
- After downloading, double-click
HIPE_2_0_0_RC3_INSTALLER.exe
Notes
- Windows 32bit systems require the allocation of 1.5GB of contiguous RAM memory for the installation. If you have a 2GB RAM memory laptop the HIPE installer may fail, if this memory is not available in the way it is required, as some users have recently reported.

Notes
- Be sure you have Java installed. You can download Java from Apple's site
- Java 1.6 update 13 or 17 must be enabled in order for the installer and HIPE to run. The option for that is under Applications/Utility/Java/Java Preferences. Click on Java Preferences and make sure that Java SE 6 appears in the pop-up window at the top of both the 'Applet' and 'Application' fields. The java SE 1.6 is available for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 2 and later.
- The compressed installer should be recognized by Stuffit Expander and should automatically be expanded after downloading. If it is not expanded, you can expand it manually using StuffIt Expander 6.0 or later.
- If you have any problems launching the installer once it has been expanded, make sure that the compressed installer was expanded using Stuffit Expander. If you continue to have problems, please contact technical support.

Download the sample data and the scripts
You can already download the sample data pools and scripts to be used with this version of the software from this password protected ftp area this password protected ftp area. it must be noted that these data are being released just for training purposes and it is therefore not allowed to publish them in any sense out of the scope of this workshop.
Depending on your browser configuration you may need to access this ftp area from the command line. In such case open a terminal window and type 'ftp ftp.sciops.esa.int' or 'sftp hipe_user@ftp.sciops.esa.int'. You will need to use the username and password provided to you as Beta Tester to download the sample data and scripts.
All the data pools are provided either as simple zipped files or as gzipped tar files that you will need to copy to your laptop and then unpack. We recommend you to create a subdirectory called 'lstore' in your '.hcss' directory. This is a hidden directory that is created during the installation process.
The resulting default directory where you should place all the pools is, depending on your operating system:
C:\Documents and Settings\(userid)\.hcss\lstore\ (Windows)
/home/(userid)/.hcss/lstore/ (Linux)
/Users/(userid)/.hcss/lstore/ (Mac OSX)
User Documentation
We recommend you to go through the following documentation before using HIPE.
Video Tutorials
You can also have a look at the following Herschel DP video
tutorials (more to come):
Note that you will need to use the username and password provided to you as workshop participant to download those video tutorials. Depending on your browser configuration you may need to access them from the command line. In such case open a terminal window and type 'ftp ftp.sciops.esa.int' or 'sftp hsc_wshop@ftp.sciops.esa.int' and follow the directory tree.
