Status of Astronomical Observation Templates (AOTs)
One of the prime goals of the Herschel Performance Verification (PV) Phase is to determine the best way to carry out astronomical observations using the different Astronomical Observation Templates (AOTs) that have been offered to the community. This involves fine-tuning of the multiple AOT parameters that were defined before launch, and adapting and optimising them based on actual demonstrated in-flight performance.
Once AOTs are considered validated by the Instrument Control Centres (ICCs) they are proposed for formal release by the Herschel Science Centre (HSC). To accompany each release, the ICCs produce a release note, explaining what has been learned about the validated AOTs.
Upon release, Astronomical Observation Requests (AORs) using validated AOTs can be scheduled for execution by the HSC. The current schedule is available here (Herschel observing schedule). A log of previous observations is available here (Herschel observing log).
The figures below summarize the AOTs released so far. The fraction of the pie chart indicates the use of the mode in the Key Project observing requests currently in the operations database.
Green = released observing mode.
Light orange = imminent release (next 2 weeks).
Orange = release within the next month.
Red = later release (beyond 1 month).
Blue = partial release for special cases.
